Why can’t I subscribe to Stumbleupon ?

On September 3, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
I'd like to create a new profile on Stumbleupon, but the thing won't let me.

It's forever showing a rotating "please wait" circle after I ente my preferred username, and then...nothing.

I'd like to use Stumbleupon's url shorterner instead of Bit.ly as per Lilach's advice when she came to see us on the course last Friday.

Outsourcing: The living nightmare of the modern entrepreneur

On September 2, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
Hello,

Ever since I've been online, I've looked to leverage by outsourcing.

My first attempt saw me use a PA from the philippines who worked on my Facebook, and disappeared with half a months pre-paid. I ran into a copywriter across the pond who I ended up giving english lessons to, and my first significant web-project, outsourced 5 timezones away got a delay that was such that I could never launch it...also met some great outsourcers along the way and got great successes with other projects.

Overall, though, the process has been very painful and frustrating, You're looking for help, get the opposite, plus waste money in the process. It can affect your morale, and I sure am no exception to that and that my experience will resonnate with many of you.

After my first few failure with oursourcing, I decided to outsource locally, and found my lovely PA, Vicky, who is a real sunshine for our company and a real support for all of us working with ICC.

On August 25, 2010, in Digital Marketing, by William Debauchez

Alexa

So many people are now using the internet to market their services/product. It is a fantastastic resource for people as a main profession or to get a second income.

The internet is accessable by all which means there is a massive audience ready to look at all the content available. You want some of that audience to see your websites.

The questions is, how do you monititor the traffic you get to your website? Alexa can help with this.  If you wish to sell space on your website you need to prove you have a lot of traffic. High Alexa rankings can enable you to sell space effectively and and a good price.

There is a toolbar that gives you instant data for any website. In a moment you can see how popular a website is. This is very beneficial if you post to article sites and wish to review the best places to post your content. The same with forums to subscribe and contribute too.

You get lots of information on the website. The data is very helpful including what are the most popular keywords used to get to your site. It also show how popular you are in different countries.

To make the most of Alexa it helps to register your website with them. You can them insert some code on your site and they are able to give you even more accurate data.

I would recommend you try out Alexa today. Let me know how you get on.

New Facebook page layout : Let your developer know

On August 20, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
Hello,

Received this latest bit of news, which should also have popped up on your Facebook Pages. Make sure to let your developer know if you're, like me, in the process of making changes to your Facebook Page.

"We announced plans last October to remove application boxes and application info sections as well as reduce the width of application tabs to optimize for the new profile and Facebook Pages format. We will be moving forward with these changes the week of August 23 and want to help you understand what to expect.

Based on feedback from developers, we have committed to the following plans to ensure a smooth transition:

* Boxes. We will notify users via messaging in profile boxes and in the Help Center that the "Boxes" tab, boxes on profiles and Pages, and application info sections will be going away.

Wordtracker vs Market Samurai

On August 18, 2010, in Digital Marketing, Social Media, by William Debauchez

keywords

I do a lot of keyword research to refine my marketing and used it as an opportunity to review two different keyword tools, Wordtracker and Market Samurai. It is easy to get to the conclusion that Market Samurai is by far the best.

Wordtrakers KEI index is very handy, but Market Samurai has an excellent interface to really make a relevant and helpful list. There is no KEI with MS, but you can export your date to excel and  perform a ratio between Phrase Match Volume and Title Competition which covers anybody’s requirements.

Google Keywords has recently been my tool of choice, but I have found that it is not as accurate as I would like as it only pings from one Google Server and each result can have wide differences.  Market Samurai seemed over the top but it provides much more detail that Google keywords does.

Finding the right keywords it a bit of a science. So  keyword experts are tapping into a big market. Not only do the keywords need to work for websites (they should be relatively wide, so you can fit in more specifics under your menus), but also for articles (long tail ones that require more refined reasearch).

If you want to do keyword research yourself Market Samurai is tremendous value if you know what you are looking for.

Best iPad Apps for business

On August 11, 2010, in Reviews & Tutorials, Social Media, by William Debauchez

iPad Apps

I have had my iPad for a while now and the more I use it, the more enjoyable it is.  There are so many apps I can not review them all myself. Just in the subject of business/productivity there are more than I can look at.  Considering how the iPad is so new there will only be more apps added and more choice.  I have looked for reviews, but again as it is so new there are not many out there.

So my question to you this week is; have you tried any apps for your iPad and what has been your user experience?

Are you posting original content?

On August 5, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez
copying others

Nobody wants their articles stolen and reused by someone else on the web, especially as a lot of time and thought are put into them. There have been a few instances lately where people have been accused of taking others work and claiming it as their own.

Now this is more easily done than people realise, for example if you get someone to research some information on your behalf and you use it, how do you know it is unique?

Of course the best thing to do is only post your own, original content, but then sometime we see things that are worth sharing. In that instance mention the source of the data and ask permission. Most people would like the backlink and recognition. If you have taken someone elses information in error, remedy it as quickly as you can.

So what if you have commisioned some data from someone and you want to find out if it unique. There is a brilliant tool called Copyscape. It is free to use and easy.  You can even check if someone is copying your own work.

Have you used anything similar, or have a story to share about copied work? I would love to hear it.

Are we all going to have our own Shopping Cart ?

On August 3, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
In the 80s, we envisioned:

"A computer on every desk"

As more and more people will have to have their own business, are we going to see:

"A shopping cart in every home" ?

I think it's not a question of whether it's going to happen, but how quickly. We're all going to have to present and sell our services, and I personally think we'll all have some form of shopping cart solution, and in fact also an affiliate platform to facilitate and structure referrals.

What do you think ?

How to litterally slash your Facebook Ads costs

On August 2, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
It's simple: Get your ad to point towards your Facebook fan page, not an external site. Your Facebook fan page should become like a secondary website for you anyway, and Facebook adverts are a great way for you to justify the investment.

Facebook likes when customers remain within Facebook because it benefits both the customer's browsing experience, and Facebook, hence your adcost is less. Plus you'll convert more if your client stays within Facebook too...

I was chatting with some colleagues over the week-end, and one of them reports a drop of 48% in Adcost, and that's even before taking into account the higher conversion...

Tweet Attacks

On July 30, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
New kid on the block, TweetAttacks, seems to be gaining ground on ailing TweetAdder. But is it any good ?

I have no idea since I can't figure out in what way it's different, and what the non-use of the API really does. Seems a bit of a strange tool that's not completely self standing either since it uses Social Oomph as a conduit for some functions...

If you've tried it already, do let us know of your experience.
We'll probably review it ourselves in August otherwise.

Tap 11 and what it can do for you

On July 29, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez
Tap 11

The new application from Chirp is already listed as the top 6 app by Twitter. Tap11 can be used in many ways and is becoming a really essential tool for businesses who use Twitter as part of their marketing campaign.

For example you can use Tap11 to moniter your Twitter brand image. You can do this by setting up alerts for when your business is being tweeted. That way you can follow discussions and maintain your brand image with your responses.

Do you have a team who Twitter? Then Tap11 is right for you. You can easily find out what your staff are tweeting and even manage your campaigns to get the best results.

You are able to follow relevant subjects easily with Tap11 and Twitter and join in with conversations to show your knowledge and skills in the marketplace.

If you are mobile, then this works on you phone as well as your PC.

Try it and let me know how you get on.

Are we becoming blind to PPC ads ?

On July 27, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
I've read a very interesting report by Ryan Deiss, where he explains, eloquant proof at hand, that the top 3 PPC ads now get less traffic than the last page 1 organic one.

In other words, people have become used to knowing they are ads, and become blind to them.

Do you agree, and what conclusions would you make as to the use of PPC ?

William
PS: Thanks to Vincent Leleux for pointing me towards this report.

Debate over large signatures on Ecademy…

On July 26, 2010, in Community, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
I already had this debate on the 4N forum where users blatently compete on who's got the largest signature. As a result, the forum is very difficult to read. Show also about the desire to push rather than share.

And today, after posting a blog on here, I got the same experience from another user, which is very rare on Ecademy. It deterred me a little.

So what do you think ? What is acceptable, what's not, where do we draw the line on Ecademy?

The power of RSS

On July 26, 2010, in Business, by William Debauchez's blog at Ecademy
50% of your tweets at least should be organic, allowing the other half to be automatic.

That it's sent automatically does not mean it has to be rubbish. In fact it can be quite the opposite.

Let me explain:

Why do people follow you ? Because of your skill, expertise, and because of the people you know, an expression of your true reach.

Finding relevant content and blogs displays skill, expertise, and true reach. These blogs have RSS and you can link those to your Twitter account. If done well, this "personal selection" can be very valuable to your followers.

Your automatic tweets should therefore
1. Be RSS linked to your own blog so your own posts obvioulsy go out as "news"
2. Be RSS linked to the experts you follow's blogs, once again getting the word out in real time

The sum of 1 and 2 should not excede 50% of your tweets, which is why all this takes some thinking.

Being able to carry out article marketing is a great thing to do if you want to get traffic for free. The problem that you might run into though is you are not going to be able to get new content onto the article directories all the time. However, if you use a service like unique article wizard your going to be able to get the unique articles that you need submitted to multiple directories at one time.

One reason that can make you use this program is that your article will go to make different directories. By taking your article to many different directories your going to be able to get out there and possibly find yourself ranking higher because of the lack of competition on those directories. You need to remember that the search engines only take the top two results from each directory to list the rest usually go in supplemental results.

Another benefit is they automate the entire process for you. By having the process automated for you then you will not have to do anything other than type up your first article and submit it. Then they will take care of the rest in getting it submitted to the various directories.

Something else that your going to enjoy is they can make the content unique in the eyes of the search engines. The content that you submit will be spun around and you will have the rights to each of those spins, but you will want to realize that they can make it different every time which can help you out with ranking higher in the search engines.

You know that it can be very time consuming signing up for each and every article directory, but with these they are going to take care of the problem for you. Signing up for these directories can be a long and drawn out process. By having to do this on your own you will know that you could spend hours doing just this. However, they are going to take care of getting you signed up for each of the directories so you will not even have to worry about it.

They can even provide bloggers and article directory owners with unique content on a daily basis. Owning your own directory is a great thing, but you know that you will need to get fresh information all the time. However, it can be hard to get if people are not using your directory. If you use this though they can submit the articles to you for your review at your site rather than you having to wait for people to find your site and submit to it.

While you know that article marketing is going to be a great way to make money you will want to know that it might not work if your information is not unique. By having new information you will find that your traffic will go up as will your page rankings that you want to have. However, it can be very difficult to get that kind of information unless you decide to have some help in your article marketing by using the unique article wizard program.

Tweet for iphone: Managing your tweets

On July 16, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

Twitter is site that has grown increasingly popular since its initial release. There are millions of people around the world that use this site every day. Because of the popularity of twittering, there are also many tools that are created to help people have the best experience with it. A great example of this is Tweet for iphone, previously known as Tweetie.

If you want to have the best experience possible with your twitter account, then you will have to make use of this tool at some point. Once you have used it, you will understand how much it impacts your ability to make the most out of your twitter-experience. If you have many followers on your twitter-account, you probably already understand how difficult it is to keep track of everything that is going on.

However, you can use the tool to help you avoid this situation. You might find yourself spending more time than usual trying to read or find tweets if you were using the twitter main site. However, the use of Tweet for iphone will allow you to find exactly what you need. You will see that your twitter experience becomes more simple to enjoy.

If you are following specific groups or posting to them, then you might further appreciate this tool. This will help you to organize messages and the groups of people that you follow. It would be harder to do this if you were to try via the twitter-website. Once you have used the tool, you will find you never want to use twitter without it again. This can be even more useful when the site is down.

Overall, the tool is very simple to use and understand. It is not complicated and is very easy to navigate. For the most part, all of the features are self-explanatory, so you won’t find yourself confused about how a feature works or what it specifically does when you use it. This can be a real asset compared to more complicated tools that are available.

If you have never used Tweet for iphone before, you might want to experience what it can offer you. This tool can truly change how you experience and view twitter, as well as how you participate. If you want to experience the best and most out of your twitter-account, then this tool is recommended highly.

Tweet with SocialOomph: The Tool That Helps Everyone

On July 12, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

SocialOomph or Tweetlater in its earlier avatar is one of those tweet tools which will help you in making life easier.   There are two kinds of services : the basic service and the paid service. However if you are interested in trying out the paid service there is also a free seven day offer. You can try out the service and if you are not happy you can skip it. You will be reverted back to the basic version of SocialOomph. This tool was developed by Dewald Pretorius of Canada.

For an average user the basic version offers many features. For starters if you are one of those people who have multiple accounts and tweet a lot then SocialOomph helps you in managing those accounts. This can be done with the help of a tweet scheduler. This is not the only thing that a tweet scheduler does. It can also allow you to follow tweeters who follow you. It will also send direct messages or DM to these followers. If you are a new member then you can also track your links by shortening them with bit.ly shortener.

You can also check your followers with SocialOomph. This will be done automatically. For instance, if one of your followers has been blocked by a sizable number of other SocialOomph users then the tool will automatically block the follower from following you. You can also follow the tweets of a person before allowing them to follow you.

If you want to know what others are tweeting about on a particular topic or who is tweeting on a particular topic then this tool helps you do that. Additionally if you do not want to receive the tweets of a particular person, you can make it mute. You can also upload and schedule bulk number of tweets.

Now, if you are going in for a paid version of SocialOomph there are some additional features. You can arrange it in such a way that you can find out twitters who are tweeting about certain topics. This is particularly useful for those who want to market their stuff but want to test the water first.

Affiliates can also keep track of their account by joining Commission alerts and Commission stats. All payments are made via PayPal.

They also have a very useful FAQ page and a tutorial page. So, if you are interested in joining SocialOomph go ahead and do it. Try the basic version. If you feel that it is not satisfying your needs, then try the trial version of the Professional package. If you are happy with that then you can go in for the professional version.

Your Twitter influence, find out how with Klout

On July 8, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

Twitter is celebrated social networking site that lets its users publish short tweets that can instantly be read by other users. The sites popularity has come from, in part, the user’s capability to interact instantly with peers, family, and celebrities. Many of these stars, as well as other accounts, have accumulated so many followers that they’re actually influencing Twitter. Using a program called Klout, people are now able to scope a user’s effect and how their tweets are influencing those who see them.

Klout is a southern California based operation that was founded just last year. The company’s mission, according to its website, is to measure a Twitter user’s influence on the social networking site. The company keeps tracks of information and data regarding a user’s personal influence and provides them with the information and ways of interpreting and using it.

A company’s score is a numerical representation of a Twitter user’s influence. The score goes from one to one hundred with higher numbers equaling a greater strength. A user with a stronger score has a higher chance of influencing other Twitter users to engage in certain actions such as clicking on a link or re-posting a message.

A different number of determining factors all make up a user’s score. How often a person’s messages are read by other Twitter users is called their reach. If you are being followed by a user with hoards of other friends and don’t post messages about the same topics then chances are, you have no influence over them. However, if your messages are usually re-tweeted and your followers reciprocated then your Twitter influence is much higher.

Another aspect in the scoring is how much influence the users have who post and re-message you. Even people who just follow your profile can affect the pull of your own influence. Klout amasses all of this data and then some when measuring a Twitter user’s score.

Tools such as these can be very useful. They are free and therefore an extremely helpful new form of advertising. The company allows advertisers and other companies to compile a list of users most likely to be interested in their product or service. Twitter, itself, has recently become an incredibly beneficial tool for advertisers to locate and market to their target audiences.

It will not be long before every Twitter account has a Klout one too. Advertisers and similar companies are already hopping on board the useful project. The power to advertise directly to target audiences without spending thousands of dollars is going to soon become normal in the ad community.

Managing Twitter with Hootsuite

On July 4, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

Twitter is a site which has become popular with many people for its social networking features. There are millions of people that make use of the site every day, which leads it to be very well known. However, once you have joined and found your many followers, you may find that you have a harder time keeping up with what is being posted. If you are already experiencing this, you may want to try out a social media organiser called Hootsuite.

For many people, once they have gained a lot of followers, or even have began to follow a lot of different members on twitter, they will realize that it is harder to keep up with everything. For example, it can be hard to keep track of personal tweets in contrast to tweets from general followers. The amount of tweets that are posted may cause you to search through the twitter site to find the members that you are looking for.

However, the use of Hootsuite can greatly improve this experience. This is a web based tool which you can use to manage your twitter-account with your followers. This can help you to be able to read your messages more easily and organize yourself further on the website. You will notice that you will be able to do this much more easier than you were previously able to via the twitter-website.

For people that are always on the go, then this is an especially useful tool. This because Hootsuite is available to use as an app on iphone. This means that you can view your feed on twitter whenever you have your phone present, which can be useful when you keep a hectic schedule. You will be able to view your tweets in a much more organized format than what you might experience with basic twitter-app on your phone.

Hootsuite itself is already fairly popular and continues to gain more attention from twitter users. Because of the easy navigation and user friendly interface, it is likely that the tool is also popular because of the range of access that it allows the user to have in comparison to other tools available. Even upon first use, it is clear that this tool is not at all as confusing as other twitter tools available.

If you have tried other options for tweeting in the past, you might find that this becomes your new favorite option to use. It is far less complicated than some of the other tools that are available. The amount of versatility that this tool holds makes it useful for anyone to try out. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced twittering veteran, you will be able to gain something from this tool.

For anyone that has been searching for a tool to help them experience twitter fully, Hootsuite should be considered. This will make it easier than it ever was to stay notified about what’s being posted. You’ll discover that this tool can be great for taking your twitter experience to the max.

Tweetmeme Experiencing The Solutions Of Twitter

On June 26, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

Twitter is a social network where people post small messages to one another and add people they want to follow. Tweetmeme is a tool that helps you make the most of Twittering by finding the best stories from for you to retweet. By sending a text you can get Twitter updates via SMS.

It’s a really convenient service that can be easily activated and cancelled if necessary. Now you don’t have to wait till your computer loads before you can check Twittermeme. This service is wonderful with a meme-tracker that tracks popular retweets. This means that you will only get relevant and interesting tweets rather than pointless ones. This keeps the messages up to date and relevant.

The system also makes it simple for readers to start following your Twitter-feed. This is particularly useful if you have a business that requires customers to follow you. Now you can send messages quickly and easily.

The website is tied in with Tweets and has a voting system on it. This is a great feature since users can rank followers on their merits. The voting system is fair and attracts more customers to your business.

The system has some really fantastic real-time search results. It also avoids spam and the clutter of the many retweets that you can receive on the website. If you use the system to perform a search then it will return the most popular trend for today as well as snippets from the story and the number of times each link has been tweeted.

It does a superior job at answering timely questions compared to navigational queries. Tweetmeme is extremely popular and is doing an amazing job that provides Twittering addicts with a fast solution to finding information that is relevant. It lets you get the best out of Twitter and narrows down the amount of spam that a user would commonly get.

It’s a very sophisticated system that is easy to use and set up. You tell twitter and yahoo to let this site read and write your streams which makes things a lot easier for you. This is a way of getting the best out of Twitter and limiting your time by finding only the relevant results. This is a great tool that will help any avid Twitter fans to make the most out of the website. The system works on many levels and it is very ingenious.

The tribe concept, which consists in harnessing the power of re-tweets to show support within a closed group will give your boardroom a new dimension. Make sure to watch the video below and see how this very simple process can work for you and your boardroom or network of advocates.

It makes no sense to have many people following your messages who will never buy from you so you need software to find people directly interested in your posts. This software helps you identify and invite those who are interested in what you offer to follow your Twitter messages. Look at MarketMeTweet today.

Social Media: How To Use Gowalla

On June 17, 2010, in Social Media, by William Debauchez

Human beings have always had networks for socializing with others. A few years ago, various subjects were discussed while waiting in line, over the back fence, or during a hair cut. Experiences, both positive and negative, with local stores, repairmen, or restaurants were transmitted among acquaintances. Naturally, not many others could be reached by this one on one relationship. It is, however, an instance of what social media is without mass communication. The Internet brought sweeping changes, bringing social networking to a global level. Now, a customer can, within minutes, let millions of others know whether he is happy or unhappy with his experience. Gowalla takes this experience one step further.

Gowalla lets the users combine a personalized experience with a social network. Members use their mobile devices to log in at theaters, attractions, restaurants, or other spots. They can proclaim their presence, recommend an establishment, or rave about the menu. A growing number of businesses are offering discounts to users who mention the site.

Members can create lists of their friends on Gowalla. Then, they can find out where everyone on the list is at the moment or restrict results to just those who happen to be nearby. Arrangements can quickly be made to decide on a location where everyone can meet later.

Checking in at designated locations or events can earn pins or patches for members. Their “passports” may also be stamped. Members are allowed ten such items at a time, after which one must be discarded to claim another. People who check in at the site where the member discarded the item can pick it up for their own if they wish.

The road trips are popular features with Gowalla members. An established route and checkpoints along the way lets users follow a precise path. Users can also create their own trips for others to take.

Users do not have to rely on others to suggest locations. Instead, members can publish a page for a club, event, restaurant, or similar attraction. Gowalla may later edit a page, merge it with one that was already in existence, or delete it. Normally, they only delete pages that are not valuable for public use, such as when a user creates a page on his bathroom.

Gowalla can be accessed through several types of mobile devices. Most recently, Gowalla has added access for the iPad. The Gowalla home page also features downloads for Palm Pre, Android, Apple iPhone, and Blackberry applications.

No doubt, social media will continue to expand, both in the number of sites and in variety. More users from around the world will join, connecting in ways impossible only a couple of decades ago. They will likely continue to prove popular with both users and businesses wishing to reach them. Sites like Gowalla will make sure that they remain fun as well.

The micro-blogging site, Twitter, has become a part of everyday life for many and a great marketing tool for businesses. For those marketing their company through Twitter, the task can become exhausting. This exhaustion comes in the form of locating individuals to follow the account. Fortunately, the program, Twollo, is an online tool that searches the interests of others and automatically follows them based upon their interests. This allows the business owner or employees to focus on what is important.

This is a free program and enables the user to have control over who follows their business account. Users are able to amend, pause, and delete interests. If this is a program that the user is not looking for, then deleting the account is simple.

Currently, there are over 10,000 users using this program to follow Twitter users and, due to the support of the OAuth implementation that Twitter uses, the program keeps the business account secure. It also supports PayPal, Google checkout, and claims to be able to drive up the number of followers.

The usage of Twollo is rather simple. Users log in with their Twitter username and password, input key terms that represent the targeted interests, and specify the maximum amount of followers wanted (optional yet necessary because Twitter blocks mass followed accounts). The program then automatically adds followers using the key terms to target individuals with similar interests.

As for how Tweeters with the proper interests are located, the many conversations taking place on Twitter are tracked. Once these individuals are found, the specified number of Tweeters are followed. It can be specified that anywhere between 10 and 50 Tweeters can be followed per day. This range of numbers keeps from raising red flags that could result in the business account being blocked.

And just as there are many positives, there has to be a negative. The negative is that spammers may be followed. Observing their Tweets is the only way to truly weed them out. They then have to be deleted manually. It may be ideal to evaluate them when the email notification is received that there is a new follower. One way to evaluate them is to see how many they are following versus how many followers they have. Too far in one direction may be a red flag.

It is also a must when using Twollo that the program is not too heavily relied upon. It cannot work on its own 100% because it is up to the user to be active in the Twitter community. This is something that an automated program cannot do. Being active int he community means reminding followers that the business is there.

Twollo can be a great tool in obtaining Twitter followers. As long as one is proactive by remaining active and running multiple Twollo campaigns to obtain as many followers as possible, you can achieve a new kind of marketing success.
